I couldn’t decide what to do tonight. It was either reading The Rum Diary by The Good Doctor, Hunter S. Thompson, or watch some Entourage. I am a huge fan of both. However I decided to do something that would expand my mind and entertain me.

I’ve been putting off watching a YouTube video titled Rapid Development With Python, Django and Google App Engine and decided that tonight would be a good night to watch it. A good friend of mine, and pro-Python software engineer, Andres Buritica referred me to it. Well going onto the page I noticed new little button right above the video. Hovering over it showed the title “Turn down the lights.” Clicking it went from:

Before Turning off the Lights

to:

After Turning off the Lights (click to enlarge)

This is why Google is pretty amazing. This is something that we needed but really never might have thought of. Simple additions to the user interface and interaction such as this make the whole YouTube experience so much better. Thank you, Google.

  1. So THAT’S what that does. I always thought somehow Google had figured out how to connect my computer to my house lights. I could never figure out how they did that, but hey, WTF, they’re GOOGLE, right? They can do anything, since the geeks have already inherited the earth, just like Jesus of Nazareth said. So WHY NOT turn off the lights in my living room while I’m watching You Tube???

Great blog, Mike, keep it up!!
